John Degelia of Bryan, Texas, is born Giovanni di Giglia on 23 October 1864 in Corleone, the son of Salvatore di Giglia and Paola Palumbo. He is baptized the same day. His godparents are Leoluca Vernagallo and Maria Antonia Marsala, a married couple.[1] At his death, his date of birth is said to have been 13 October 1863.[2]
Giovanni's brother, Liborio, a rural guard, marries Lucia Riina in 1882.
Giovanni marries Maria Santa Riina, Lucia's sister, daughter of Vincenzo Riina and Lucia Orlando, on 26 June 1887 in Corleone.[3]
Giovanni and Maria Santa have ten known children: Sam (1888), Frances Paula (1890), Laura (c. 1892), Ben (1896), Annie (1898), Tony (1901), Luke (c. 1903), Bessie (1905), Charlie (1906), and Mary (1910).[4]
Giovanni's brother, Bernardo, dies at age 29 in September 1887, probably while imprisoned.
Sam and Laura are born in Italy.
In 1894, Giovanni immigrates with about 65 other people from Corleone.

In the 1940 federal census of Justice Precinct 4, Bryan, Brazos, Texas, taken 27 April, John Degelia, 72 (b. 1868), and wife Mary, 68 (b. 1872), both born in Italy, own their home at 609 North Parker, worth $2,000. With them are daughters Bessie, 27 (b. 1913), and Mary, 25 (b. 1915), both born in Texas. None of them have an occupation.[10]
John Degelia, of 609 No. Parker, Bryan, Brazos, Texas, dies 25 October 1947, reportedly at age 84 (he is 83), from coronary occlusion with contributory cause of diabetes mellitus. John lived in Bryan for 51 years. He was married, of the Italian race, born 13 October 1863. Son of Sam Degelia and Francis ? both of Italy. Informant Luke Degelia of Bryan. John is buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Bryan.[2] He is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Bryan. On his grave stone are his name and years of life, a photo, and this inscription: “Came as a penniless young man to Bryan, in 1894, via New Orleans from Italy. His success was here - Pioneer citizen - farmer - stockman - faithful to his church - a devoted husband and father.” His FindAGrave profile links him to his wife, Maria Santa Reina Degelia (1868-1951) and eight of their children: Sam Degelia (1888-1965), Frances Paula Degelia Collida (1890-1949), Ben Degelia (1896-1969), Annie Degelia Palermo (1898-1974), Tony Degelia (1901-1977), Bessie Degelia Catina (1905-1968), Charlie Degelia (1906-1983) and Mary Degelia Gullo (1910-1995).[4]
Tony dies on 5 December 1977 at age 76 from pancreatic cancer.[6]
